UKHRUL: India suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Vietnam in their Group C opener of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, Australia 2026 in Perth on Wednesday, despite a historic debut goal from Sanfida Nongrum.
Vietnam took the lead in the 30th minute through Van Su Ngan Thi. After the break, less than 6 minutes after Nongrum was introduced by coach Amelia Valverde, the Meghalaya midfielder announced herself on the continental stage. After Vietnam had a second goal ruled out for handball via VAR, India won a free-kick during a counterattack. Sanfida stepped up and struck on goal; though the goalkeeper managed to get a hand to it, the ball nestled into the back of the net in the 52nd minute.
The goal marked a historic moment as Sanfida became the first player from Meghalaya to represent the Indian senior women’s team. However, Vietnam sealed the contest in dramatic fashion when Van Su Ngan Thi struck again in stoppage time (90’+4) to secure a 2-1 win.
Meanwhile, in a significant development for Indian football, Sweety Devi Ngangbam has been named captain of the Indian women’s national team for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026.
The 26-year-old centre-back from Manipur has steadily risen through the ranks since debuting for Team Blue under the U-16 category in 2014. She featured in the AFC U-19 qualifiers in 2016 and joined the senior team in 2017, emerging as a promising defender. Since becoming a regular international after 2019, she has accumulated 69 caps.
Ngangbam’s footballing foundation was shaped early under the guidance of her father, a football coach. Frequently competing against boys during her formative years sharpened her physical strength, positioning, anticipation and tackling precision. Facing stronger and faster opponents helped build the composure she now displays against some of Asia’s top attackers.
