ONGC’s Tripura Breakthrough: India’s First CNG-Powered Drilling Rigs Cut Diesel Use by 70%

AGARTALA: Seventy percent less diesel, zero compromise on performance, ONGC’s Tripura Asset has cracked the code for greener drilling operations by becoming India’s first to run new generation rigs on CNG cascades, setting a new benchmark for the oil and gas sector.

According to the state-owned oil major, this pioneering initiative enables up to 70% substitution of diesel with domestically produced natural gas in drilling operations.

“The new generation drilling rigs are operating seamlessly with CNG cascades, without any compromise on engine performance or operational reliability,” an ONGC official stated.

It is learned that the project has been implemented in collaboration with Tripura Natural Gas Corporation Limited (TNGCL), demonstrating how indigenous energy resources can be leveraged for cleaner and more resilient upstream operations.

Meanwhile, the initiative delivers multiple benefits beyond environmental gains. “This first-of-its-kind initiative has resulted in a significant reduction in carbon emissions while simultaneously lowering operating costs,” ONGC officials said.

However, the most crucial achievement lies in reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. “The project directly contributes to India’s energy self-reliance, which remains our top priority,” the company emphasized in its statement.

According to ONGC, the collaboration with TNGCL has proven that “domestically produced natural gas can be effectively leveraged for cleaner and more resilient upstream operations.”

The success of this pilot project could potentially pave the way for similar implementations across other ONGC assets nationwide, marking a significant shift toward cleaner and more sustainable drilling practices in India’s oil and gas industry.
