Imphal, June 18: Amid violence in Manipur since May 3 last, the 22nd anniversary of the Great June Uprising Unity Day was observed in Imphal on Sunday.
The main observance function was held at Kekrupat in Imphal where the memorial of the people killed in the June 18, 2001 protest in the wake of the extension of ceasefire agreement between the NSCN-IM and the government of India “without territorial limit”.

Unlike other years, no public meeting was organized and only the leaders and representatives of civil society organisations and members of the families of the “uprising victims” turned up to pay homage to the memorial of the victims.
Ahead of the day, the organizers had announced for observing the day in a low key manner in the backdrop of violence unfolding in the state since May 3 last.

The United Committee, Manipur (UCM) and the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organization (AMUCO) have been observing June 18 every year as “The Great June Uprising, Unity Day”.
Talking to the media on the sideline of the observance, leaders of UCM and AMUCO reiterated their stand for protection of the territorial integrity of the state of Manipur.
