Ukhrul, April 23: Amidst the ongoing crisis at the Indo-Myanmar border, Kachouphung, a Tangkhul village, is providing shelter to the Kukis from nearby villages who have fled their homes on Wednesday.

In a tragic turn of events, two Kuki settlements situated at International Border Pillar No. 118, Gampal and Haijang, were set on fire by unidentified persons. Gampal and Haijang are about 14 Km from Kachouphung Village, sharing International Border Pillar No. 121.

Kachouphung Village Authority informed this correspondent that the villagers of Kachouphung Kuki, about 2 km away, are being provided shelter at their village. “For safety and security reasons, women and children came seeking shelter at our village, carrying a few of their belongings. Now, they are being put up at different houses,” said the VA.

According to the Superintendent of Police of Kamjong, Ningshem Vashum, there are 16 houses in Gampal and 12 in Haijang. While filing this report, the Kamjong Police are on their way to the villages and have yet to ascertain the actual causes. Ground reports are still being awaited due to the remoteness of the locations deep into the Indo-Myanmar border.

The District Magistrate has issued a prohibitory order in the entire village jurisdiction of the villages, citing a significant risk of law and order issues. The houses were allegedly set on fire by ‘unknown miscreants’ at approximately 9:00 AM today.

Update:

As per police report received, 14 houses at Gambal/Gampal and 8 houses at Haiyeng/Haijang were allegedly burnt by “unknown miscreants.”
