Kamjong: The vibrant hills of Kamjong reverberated with the thrilling energy of the Kamjong Brotherhood Cup Football Championship, which took place at Phaikoh Village playground from October 21 to October 24, 2024. This highly anticipated tournament, organized by the Assam Rifles Battalion stationed at Kamjong, brought together eight spirited teams from the region, showcasing the essence of unity, teamwork, and community cohesion amid the ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur. The tournament was not just a celebration of football, but a powerful platform for strengthening bonds between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities living along the remote Indo-Myanmar border.

A Celebration of Sportsmanship and Unity

The championship saw fierce competition between teams across two pools:

Pool A : Chassad Village Authority, Phaikoh Village Authority, Kamjong United FC, and Phaikoh Youth Club.

Pool B : Phaikoh Men’s Society, Kangpat Student Union, Kamjong Student Union, and KSO Community School.

The knock-out matches, which began on the morning of October 21, brought electrifying moments that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. In the first match, Chassad faced off against Phaikoh Youth Club, showcasing spectacular footwork and attacking prowess. The intensity only heightened in the afternoon as KSO Community School battled Phaikoh Men’s Society, with both teams exhibiting tactical brilliance, much to the delight of the cheering crowds.

Spectacular Semi-Finals and Grand Finale

The semi-final rounds on October 22 were a testament to the sheer grit and determination of all teams. Kamjong United FC displayed impeccable ball control and precision, storming through their semi-final clash. The anticipation reached fever pitch as Phaikoh Men’s Society engaged in a nail-biting contest that left spectators spellbound, securing their place in the final.

The grand final match on October 24, between Kamjong United FC and Kamjong Veteran Club, was a display of football at its finest. The atmosphere at the Phaikoh Village playground was electric as fans eagerly awaited the whistle. Kamjong United FC, a Tangkhul team, dominated the game from the start, with skillful passing, elegant dribbling, and stunning shots on goal. A beautiful bicycle kick by their star forward broke the deadlock in the first half, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Two more well-placed goals followed, sealing a 3-0 victory for Kamjong United FC, much to the jubilation of their supporters.

Cultural Program and Prize Distribution

Before the final match, a mesmerizing cultural program was organized, which showcased the rich heritage of the local Tangkhul and Kuki communities. Traditional dances and musical performances enthralled the crowd, adding a cultural dimension to the sporting event.

The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by the esteemed DIG, HQ 10 Sector Assam Rifles, who graced the event as the Chief Guest. In a gesture of appreciation for the teams’ remarkable efforts, the Chief Guest presented the championship trophy to Kamjong United FC. Both the winners and runners-up were awarded lucrative cash prizes in recognition of their hard work and sportsmanship. Individual awards were also handed out to players who stood out for their excellence, passion, and dedication on the field, with special mentions for the Best Goalkeeper, Top Scorer, and Most Valuable Player.

In his closing address, the Chief Guest praised the resilience and spirit of the people of Kamjong district. He highlighted how such events go beyond the game, fostering harmony and unity, even in challenging times. His words resonated with the audience as he commended the Assam Rifles Battalion at Kamjong for organizing the tournament and contributing to the community’s well-being.
