UKHRUL: The Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC) on Sunday has strongly refuted the allegations of exacerbating communal hatred between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur.
In a statement, KHRC refuted to the allegations made in a letter by Muzamil Khan, State Director, International Federation (NITI AAYOG & MSME, Govt. of India), addressed to the National Human Rights Commission of India on January 15.
KHRC asserted that its primary mission is to protect tribal rights, safeguard tribal land, and preserve the life and dignity of the Kuki community, while adding that the organization stands with the public to support the voice demanding a separate administration for the Kuki community under the Indian Constitution.
“KHRC is not against any community or organization. It is committed to fighting human rights violations, injustice, and sexual violence against women,” it stated.

On the NRC issue, KHRC clarified that its response to Arambai Tenggol leader Korounganba Khuman regarding the NRC in Manipur, cannot be taken as a response to the Manipur government.
KHRC’s response was: “NRC in the Kuki area can be applied only by the people’s choice, not by outsiders,” KHRC stated while adding that it cannot be blamed for the broken integrity of Manipur.
“The incident of May 3, 2023 totally separated the people and land of the Kuki and Meitei communities, creating a deep divide,” it stated.
Regarding registration, KHRC explained that the organisation was formed during the war-torn situation in Manipur.
“Due to the present unstable circumstances, registration has not been possible. KHRC acknowledges the tragic loss of over 260 lives and displacement of more than 60,000 individuals in the ethnic conflict since May 3, 2023. The organization emphasizes advocating for the rights and dignity of the Kuki community amid the conflict between the Meitei and tribal Kuki communities,” it stated.

Stating that it denies any actions or statements intended to vilify the peace process or violate fundamental human rights, KHRC called for an impartial investigation into the allegations and urged the National Human Rights Commission of India to recognize its efforts in promoting human rights and social cohesion in Manipur.
“KHRC remains dedicated to working with all stakeholders to restore trust and achieve geographical and communal harmony in Manipur, ensuring the protection of life, dignity, and human rights for all affected communities,” it added.
