IMPHAL, July 19: Kom Union Manipur (KUM) has appealed to all not to publish any press statement relating to the Kom community without its knowledge.

Addressing a press conference today at KR Lane, Imphal, KUM president Serto Ahao Kom said that using the name of the union, one individual identified as S. Kom had written a press release in Kuki language and uploaded it on social media on July 16 last.

Serto Ahao clarified that S.Kom does not belong to the Kom tribe. “We came to learn he is from Phailen village in Kangpokpi district which is not a Kom village. “As such, the press release uploaded on social media is not related to the Kom tribe and KUM has no knowledge about it,” Serto Ahao said. “His motive and intention are purely to implicate the Kom tribe into the present conflict”, he added.

Serto Ahao Kom then said that the Kom tribe will remain as it is (Kom tribe) while stating that the tribe/community will maintain its neutrality and stand for peaceful coexistence among various communities in the state.

Saying that KUM is an apex body of the Kom tribe, he appealed to all not to use the union’s name or the tribe’s name in any manner without its consent in the future.

He added that using the name of KUM and Kom tribe by any individual or community may mislead the tribe and bring unwanted outcomes.
