Kuki-Zo Leadership Sets Three Preconditions for Ceasefire Ahead of April 5 Talks

Kangpokpi, Apr 2: Amid ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur, Kuki-Zo leaders have presented three preconditions for ceasing hostilities with the Meitei community. The announcement, made during a crucial consultation meeting in Kangpokpi, comes just days before a high-level dialogue in New Delhi, where the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is set to mediate talks between the two communities.

The meeting, held at the KBC Centre Church Hall in Kangpokpi District Headquarters, was convened by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills Kangpokpi District, and witnessed participation from the Kuki-Zo Council, the apex political platform representing the Kuki-Zo people. Also present were leaders from various civil society organizations, including the Sadar Hills Chiefs’ Association, Kuki Inpi, student bodies, women’s organizations, and other tribal representatives.

In a firm declaration, Kuki-Zo leaders outlined three non-negotiable conditions for any cessation of hostilities:

  1. No Cross-Movement: There shall be no movement of Meitei individuals in Kuki-Zo-dominated areas and vice versa.
  2. Initiation of Dialogue: Meaningful and structured dialogue must commence as part of the ceasefire process.
  3. Six-Month Ceasefire Period: The cessation of hostilities must be observed for a period of six months.

With tensions in the region still running high, the Kuki-Zo leadership has made it clear that peace will not be possible unless their conditions are met. The April 5 meeting in New Delhi, where the MHA is expected to facilitate negotiations, will be a crucial moment in determining the next course of action in inter-community relations in Manipur.
