Imphal, June 29: Excluding the seven Kuki-Zo BJP legislators, BJP MLAs in Manipur met on Sunday at the state party office in Imphal to discuss the possibility of bringing back a popular government. The meeting came a day ahead of a scheduled dialogue between Manipur’s civil society organisations and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in New Delhi.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said, “The BJP legislators have already given a clear signal to the Centre that they are ready to form a popular government.” He noted that the gathering aimed to review recent engagements between the state leaders and central leadership as part of a peace restoration roadmap.

Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13 this year, after Biren Singh resigned from the post of Chief Minister on February 9 amid prolonged ethnic violence and political uncertainty. The Centre placed the state assembly under suspended animation following months of turmoil that began with the May 3, 2023 ethnic conflict.
At present, Manipur has 59 active members in its 60-member Legislative Assembly, with one seat vacant following the demise of NPP MLA N. Kayisii from Tadubi constituency.
Sunday’s meeting saw the attendance of 22 BJP MLAs. Eight others, including legislators from Heirok, Khurai, Chandel, Utlou, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa, Nungba, Wangkhei, and Wabgai constituencies, were absent reportedly due to personal reasons.
