Ukhrul, Mar 11: The Lamkang Kurchuknao Kunpun (Lamkang Students’ Union) has vehemently condemned the Government’s decision to revoke the Free Movement Regime and build border fences. Strongly opposing the move, the union stated that the policies threatened to divide communities, disrupt livelihoods, and reverse years of progress toward cooperation, inclusivity, and human rights.
The Lamkang union considered the Government’s decision a grave misstep that directly targets the rights, dignity, and heritage of the Naga people, assaulting the freedom, unity, and shared future of the Naga communities across borders.

“The construction of border fences represents an aggressive effort to divide Naga families, communities, and territories. This decision disregards the Naga people’s historical connection to the land and their right to live without arbitrary restrictions. By revoking the FMR and erecting border fences, the Government is not merely closing borders; it is deepening the divisions between Naga people on both sides of the border, disregarding their historical and cultural ties, and perpetuating a cycle of mistrust and marginalization,” the union said.
Moreover, the union stated that the Government failed to recognize the unique and historical circumstances of the Naga people and imposed policies that disregard their fundamental rights.
“This is not just an issue of border security but cultural survival and historical rights,” it said.
The Lamkang Students’ Union then urged the Government to reconsider the ill-advised course of action and to reinstate the Free Movement Regime, immediately ceasing the construction of divisive border fences.
