Hyderabad, Dec 13: It was the 30 years re-union seminar of 1992 batch (45 RR) IPS officers held on December 12 and 13, 2022 at Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad. Manipur’s late RN Hopingson, who was killed in an ambush by militants in 1995 in Senapati district, was dearly remembered by his batchmates in the event. His family from Ukhrul was invited by NPA & the batchmate officers to SVP NPA for the re-union program. A nephew and a niece of the martyred officer attended the two-day event at Hyderabad.
“It was an experience of a lifetime to meet the officer friends of our late uncle in person and relive their old memories of late RN Hopingson which they shared during the 2nd day programme. In a solemn wreath-laying ceremony attended by 1992 IPS batch officers, we got an opportunity to pay floral tribute and homage to our late uncle whose name is permanently engraved in the memorial site along with other police martyrs of the nation, who made their supreme sacrifices at the alter of duty. To be invited to an official program which turned out to be a family-like gathering was so heartwarming. The memories we gathered and took back home with us will be cherished forever,” said the nephew Ngachonshem Jagoi.

While most of the batchmates of RN Hopingson remembered him for his smile and laughter, great teammanship, and for being a lover of chess and swimming, Harmeet Singh, a batchmate of ‘Hope’ and now the Police Commissioner of Guwahati, fondly remembered late RN Hopingson as someone who had a brilliantly wicked sense of humor and timing. It could be said that in his death, a fine officer was lost and a martyr was born. His batchmates from across India paid rich tributes by remembering late RN Hopingson’s dedication, commitment and hard work for whatever job he was assigned during his training and his initial field postings in Manipur. They all expected that his selfless service and relentless hard work would inspire and ignite young students to achieve greater heights in their life and contribute in nation building. The batchmates continue to remember his mother and sisters even after decades of his passing, while the family also continues to hand out awards to meritorious students of Ukhrul District in HSLC Exam every year in order to pass on the legacy of a great son of the soil.
Late RN Hopingson was the only son of late RN Shangreihui and RN Ningchungla. He hailed from Phalee Village of Ukhrul District and belonged to the Tangkhul Naga community. He was a 1992 batch IPS officer, one of the first IPS officers from his community, completed his phase-II training in November 1994 from SVP NPA, and died a martyr on 2nd June 1995.
