Ukhrul: The Major Bob Khathing Football Tournament 2024-25 is all set to begin on January 10 at the Astro Turf Ground in Senapati. Organised by the Red Shield Division of the Indian Army in partnership with the Senapati District Olympic Association (SDOAM), the tournament promises an exciting display of talent and sportsmanship.

The event is held in honour of Major Bob Khathing, also known as Ralengnao Khathing, a respected figure in Indian history. Born on February 28, 1912, in Ukhrul, Manipur, Khathing was the first tribal Indian to serve as an Ambassador. He had a remarkable career as a soldier, civil servant, and diplomat. During World War II, he served in the British Indian Army and received prestigious awards like the Military Cross and Member of the British Empire.

After India gained independence, Khathing played a key role in integrating Tawang into India in 1951. He also helped establish the Sashastra Seema Bal, Nagaland Armed Police, and the Naga Regiment. Later, he served as India’s Ambassador to Burma (now Myanmar) from 1972 to 1975. For his contributions, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1957. Khathing passed away on January 12, 1990, but his legacy continues to inspire.

Eighteen teams will participate in the tournament, divided into two groups. Group A features Zalengam FC, David Memorial Team, Senapati FA, 27 United FC, Kamlesh FC, South Changoubung Youth Club, Ratna FC, and Leivons FC. Group B includes Gorkha Christian FC, Senapati FC, Asufii FA (B), Sadar Hills FA, Hills Academy FC, Gorkha FA, Sakol FC, and Football 4 Change.

The matches will follow a knockout format, with the quarter-finals on January 13, the semi-finals on January 14, and the final on January 15. The winning team will take home Rs. 1 lakh, while the runners-up will receive Rs. 50,000. Individual awards like the Golden Boot, Golden Glove, and Best Player will also be given out on the final day.
