Man killed in hit and run case, taxi driver arrested

A 65-year-old man was killed and another critically wounded after being hit by a recklessly driven town taxi near DC official quarters at Police bazaar in Ukhrul town on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Chiphang Shangreihao s/o (L) Chiphang Wungho of Lanaitang and the injured as Kh Thoiba Singh (65) s/o (L) Kh Tomba Singh of Singjamei Chingamakha Leikai, Imphal West.

According to Ukhrul police, the incident occured around 7:50 pm when a speeding Bolero taxi bearing Registration No. MN01X 8738 knocked down the two pedestrians recklessly when they were returning home.

The police immediately rushed the two victims to the district hospital where Shangreihao succumbed to his injuries. The injured Thoiba Singh was referred out to Imphal in a critical condition.

The police chased down the taxi which sped off after the crime and arrested the driver identified as Chirmingam Kashak (25) s/o Cmpo Kashak of Zingsui village, Kamjong district.

A case has been registered under FIR No. 3(4)2021 Ukl PS U/S 279/304 (A)/338 IPC at Ukhrul Police Station.
