Manipur: 13 bodies killed in gunfight in Tengnoupal brought to JNIMS for post-mortem

Imphal: Bodies of 13 persons killed in Tengnoupal district were brought to Imphal on Monday midnight and are currently kept at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) for post-mortem.

According to a police report, 13 persons were killed in a gunfight between unknown armed miscreants at Leithao village near Saibol in Tengnoupal district under Machi police station on Monday afternoon. District police and security forces rushed to the spot. A case has been registered and an investigation is ongoing.

According to a police source, identification of at least 11 deceased have been identified and post-mortems for the remaining two are being undergone. All the identified victims are from valley areas, in which four are from Imphal East, three from Bishnupur, two from Imphal West and one each from Thoubal and Kakching, it said.

Meanwhile, additional security forces have been deployed at the JNIMS complex to prevent the gathering of crowds and mobs.

For the unversed, at least 13 persons were killed in fresh gunfight violence in the Tengnoupal district, the highest death toll in a single day reported since the ethnic conflict erupted in Manipur on May 3. 

The ethnic tensions in Manipur that have entered the eighth month have left at least 182 dead and over 50,000 people homeless.
