Manipur 2022 polls: Miscreants fire at NPP worker’s house, bomb threat at BJYM president’s house

Imphal: Amid enhanced security measures in view of the ensuing elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly, threatening of political workers with arms and bombs continue in Manipur.

Miscreants opened fire several rounds of guns at the house of a worker of the National People’s Party (NPP) at Chanam Sandrok under Irilbung police station of Imphal East district in the wee hours of today, police said. No human casualty was reported in the firing at the house of Sangakpam Angou Sharma, around 1.15 am, according to police.

Police who conducted a spot enquiry today found many bullet hit marks at the GI-sheet fencing wall and to a car parked at the front courtyard. The police further recovered some empty cases. Later, police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to find out the perpetrator(s) of the crime.However, family members suspected the hands of workers of a rival candidate while saying that Angou Sharma is an active worker of the NPP.

Angry over the incident, locals of Chanam Sandrok today staged a protest and shouted various slogans against gun attack. The protesters appealed not to indulge in such acts tantamount to breaching the peace and tranquility of the village while demanding booking of the culprit(s) behind the gun attack.

Yet in another threat to political workers, a live hand grenade was found deposited at the house of Manipur unit president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), M Barish Sharma at Wangkhei under Porompat police station of Imphal East district.

Reports said that the hand grenade was found by Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel at the house cum personal guard of the BJYM president early today morning, around 4.30 am.

Police who rushed to the spot immediately after being informed called out personnel of the Manipur Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad who defused the same around 7 am. The hand grenade was later disposed off at a safe place, the police said.
