Manipur CM assures compensation for vegetable, livestock farmers affected by violent hailstorm

Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday assured compensation for the damages caused to standing crops and vegetables as well as poultry and livestock destroyed or killed by the recent heavy hailstorm in Manipur.

Biren Singh made the assurance during a visit to some areas in Keirao and Kshetrigao areas of Imphal East district severely affected by the recent natural disaster.

During the visit, the chief minister accompanied by MLA L Rameshwor, Imphal East deputy commissioner Kh Diana and officials of the district administration also interacted with the affected people taking shelter at relief camps.

“Listened to the grievances of the affected families and discussed the measures taken to support the affected communities during this challenging time,” he wrote on his Facebook page after the visit.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the visit, the chief minister assured that farmers affected by the recent disaster will be compensated.

He said that steps have been taken to assess the extent of damages caused to the standing crops and vegetables by the hailstorm.

Officials of the Agriculture and Horticulture department have started a survey to assess the extent of damages. As soon as the survey reports are submitted, the state government will compensate for the losses, he said.

The state government will also compensate for the losses suffered by poultry and livestock farmers, he added.

The chief minister said that as per the latest report collected by the government authorities, over 15,500 houses were partially or completely damaged by the recent hailstorm.

The state government has provided roofing sheets for the houses whose damages were caused to the roofs only through the concerned deputy commissioners.

The distribution of roofing materials to the affected houses will be completed within the next four/five days, he added.

However, it will take time to rebuild the houses which were completely razed and the government will provide adequate compensation for rebuilding the houses, he assured.

The chief minister said that relief materials including daily requirements are being provided to the inmates of the relief camps.

The violent hailstorm that lashed several parts of the state on May 5 had hit farmers hard with their seasonal vegetables and fruits, particularly ready-to-harvest watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin, green chilli, etc. and others were completely ruined.

Extensive damages have been caused to standing vegetables across the valley districts.
