Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) commemorated the 60th death anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, today with a function at Congress Bhavan in Imphal.
MPCC president K Meghachandra, CLP leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh led the party members and others in offering floral tribute to the statue of the former Prime Minister erected inside the Congress Bhavan.
Speaking to the reporters by the sideline of the observance, O Ibobi Singh highlighted the pivotal role which Jawaharlal Nehru had taken in “saving the present day India”.
He also highlighted Nehru’s role in India’s freedom struggle and his vision for a modern, secular, and democratic India after independence and as the first Prime Minister of free India.
“Nehru had taken a major role in the freedom movement and after the British left India, he (Nehru) took a great responsibility to develop the country. That is why he is known as the architect of modern India”, Ibobi added.
