Ukhrul/Imphal, August 18: A police constable in Manipur has been suspended after being arrested over the weekend on charges of extorting money at gunpoint, officials sources said on Monday.

The constable, identified as Md. Amumacha and currently posted with the Criminal Investigation Department (Special Branch), was detained on Saturday along with an accomplice, Tampakmayum Arshad, in Imphal East district.

According to a suspension order issued by the Superintendent of Police in Bishnupur, the officer was arrested by Andro police for his alleged role in “extortion of money by using firearms from the general public.” He has been restricted from leaving his headquarters in the Bishnupur reserve line without prior approval from authorities.
