Gorkha Body Slams Fake Group for Spreading Communal Hate in Manipur

Ukhrul, May 28: A fake organisation claiming to represent Manipur’s Gorkhas has drawn strong condemnation from the Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union (MGWU), which has labelled the move as divisive and harmful to peace.

In an official press release, the MGWU — the apex body representing Manipur’s Gorkha community — categorically distanced itself from inflammatory statements being circulated under the name “Manipur Gorkha Union (MGU)”. The MGWU described the MGU as a fictitious group with no recognition or mandate from the Gorkha community.

“These individuals are completely non-existent and have no connection with the Gorkha community,” the statement read, adding that the rhetoric used by the so-called MGU amid the ongoing Kuki-Meitei conflict is highly irresponsible and threatens inter-community harmony.

The MGWU also expressed deep concern over a recent news video from Hills Mojo, which allegedly used a photo of MGWU members in a report about the fake MGU. The union called it a “serious misrepresentation” that misleads the public and harms the image of MGWU. It demanded immediate correction and urged media houses to uphold journalistic integrity and due diligence.

Reiterating its neutral stance and commitment to peace, the MGWU cautioned members of the Gorkha community to refrain from sharing or promoting provocative content. “Strict disciplinary and legal action will be initiated” against such actions, it warned.

“MGU does not represent us, and such malicious attempts to misuse the Gorkha identity will not be tolerated,” the statement concluded.
