Manipur holds full dress rehearsal for 75th Republic Day celebrations

Imphal: Manipur Government conducted full dress rehearsal for State level celebration of India’s 75th Republic Day under tight security in Imphal on Thursday amid boycotts from proscribed groups.

The event witnessed around 26 uniformed contingents. The rehearsal parade led by Commanding Officer of First Manipur Rifles Kshetrimayum Ravikumar as Parade Commander started from First Manipur Rifles ground, passed through Jail road, Kangla Gate, Babupara road and concluded at its initial point.

The police implemented traffic diversions, not only to facilitate the rehearsal but also to acclimate commuters to the changed routes until completion of the event.

It may be mentioned that the full dress rehearsal was earlier scheduled on January 24 but following a notification from Traffic Control Police Wing, Manipur, it was held on the eve of Republic Day.

Student bodies and CSOs in the state have already announced to forgo the republic day celebration in the wake of prevailing grim situation.

The People’s Liberation Army Manipur ahs also said it will boycott of Republic Day terming it a “Repressive Day”. “India’s celebration of “26 January” as Republic Day has no meaning to the People of Manipur (Kangleipak) but a “Repressive Day” and not ‘People’s Day’ to the struggling people of Manipur.”
