Imphal: A team of Narcotic and Affairs of Border (NAB) of Manipur police arrested an alleged inter-state drug trafficker today along with 34 kg of opium, an official source said.
The NAB team arrested the alleged drug trafficker who came on a flag post vehicle without escort after a brief chase early today morning, around 4.30 am, the police said.
The police said that the NAB team on random and surprise frisking and checking intercepted a vehicle with flag post without any escort coming at Lamlai area in a suspicious manner from Ukhrul side along Imphal-Ukhrul Road.
The vehicle was signaled to stop but instead of paying heed, it sped away. The NAB team then chased the vehicle and overpowered him in the Khurai Ningthoubung area, the police added.
Upon checking the vehicle, 34 packets (34 kg approx) of suspected opium (kani) were found in two bags in the vehicle.
On spot verification, the NAB team identified the driver as Khogen Singh (36) of Imphal East district.
On spot verification, Khogen Singh admitted that he is an inter-state drug trafficker and he indulged in trafficking of illicit drugs several times before, the police also said.
According to the police, Khogen Singh further stated that he collected the opium from a person from Molnom village and came towards Imphal to hand over the same item to another agent to be sent by his associate in Guwahati.
A case was registered at NAB police station for investigation, the police added.
