Imphal, October 8: Manipur is witnessing a sharp rise in dengue cases, with the Health department confirming 1,941 infections so far this year. Of these, 463 new active cases were detected in just the first eight days of October.
Officials said Imphal West is the worst-hit district, recording 1,416 cases this year, while Imphal East district reported 284 cases and Thoubal district with 60 cases. Bishnupur district has logged 46 cases and one death, followed by Kakching (39), Senapati (34), Ukhrul (20), Chandel (12), and Kamjong (8). Smaller numbers were also found in Tamenglong (7), Tengnoupal (6), Noney (5), Churachandpur (3), and Kangpokpi (1). No dengue cases have been reported from Jiribam and Pherzawl districts.

A review meeting chaired by Sumant Singh, Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Governor of Manipur, was held on October 6 at the NHM Conference Hall to discuss the situation. The meeting reviewed this year’s data and compared it with last year’s figures.
Sumant Singh said that cleaning up mosquito breeding sites remains the best way to stop dengue from spreading. He urged families and local communities to take part in source reduction activities in their neighbourhoods.
Following the review, Health Services officials met representatives of Imphal’s local clubs and appealed for their active involvement. Volunteers will be trained by State Urban Health Teams to identify and destroy mosquito breeding areas.

From Tuesday onwards, local club members, ASHAs, Urban Health staff, and State Urban Teams have started a joint drive across different localities to remove stagnant water and prevent further spread of dengue. Health officials have asked the public to keep their surroundings clean and to cooperate with the ongoing clean-up efforts.
