Ukhrul, October 12, 2024: The Kuki Zo community said it took a significant step on Frdiay with the official formation of the Kuki Zo Council (KZC).
In a press release issued on October 11 by Khaikhohauh Gangte, information secretary KZO, it said the newly established governing body aims to address the pressing issues faced by the community amid ongoing ethnic tensions with the Meitei. This council, designed as the highest decision-making authority for the Kuki Zo people, will provide a unified platform for dialogue, advocacy, and leadership.

KZC said that five members were elected to lead the Council, marking the formal start of its operations with Ch. Ajang Khongsai elected as the Chief of the Governing Council, while Haenlianthang Vaiphei was named Chairman of the Kuki Zo Council. Other key appointments include Thangzamang Zou as Secretary, GS Gangte as Finance Secretary, and Khaikhohauh Gangte as Information Secretary.
The newly formed council further stressed that the formation of KZC comes at a crucial time, as the Kuki Zo people navigate complex socio-political challenges, particularly the ongoing conflict with the Meitei. In his address, Chief Ajang Khongsai emphasized that the Council’s mission is to protect and promote the collective interests of the community, ensuring that traditional values and unity are upheld.

Representatives from various Kuki Zo tribes, including Vaiphei Peoples Council, United Zou Organisation, Gangte Tribe Union, Hmar Inpui, and others, participated in the leadership election. The Council will act as a formal governing body, with tribe presidents and Inpi representatives playing active roles in governance and decision-making, the press release said.
The Kuki Zo Council furthermore said that the Council will serve as an authoritative voice on political and civil issues, both locally and nationally. The newly elected leaders stressed their commitment to advancing the well-being of the Kuki Zo people and fostering stronger political representation. The Council’s role extends to coordinating with civil society and government bodies to ensure that the community’s concerns are effectively addressed, it added.
