Manipur: Mass burial at Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur opposed

Imphal: The proposed mass burial of around 35 deceased Kukis on August 3 near a Sericulture Farm situated in Torbung Bangla under Torbung Gram Panchayat, in Bishnupur District is being objected by various quarters. Meitei villagers of Torbung Bangla have objected to the mass burial planned by the Kuki community in the Meitei area under Torbung Gram Panchayat and termed it as a violation of international law and an invitation to a civil war.

The displaced people of Torbung Bangla also said that they will return to their village starting August 4, and demanded the government to push away Kuki armed miscreants who have occupied Meitei areas from Torbung Gram Panyachat Ward no. 1 to Ward no. 6 by August 3. Representatives of Social Welfare Club and Meira Paibi of Torbung Bangla briefed the media at Manipur Press Club today. Advisor of the club, Loitongbam Surchand, said areas in Torbung Bangla, namely Waikhurok, Torbung Govindpur, Torbung Bazar, Torbung Sabal Leikai, Kangvai, Phougakchao Ikhai, Phougakchao Ikhai Awang Leikai, which are under under Torbung GP cannot be converted into a graveyard for Narco Terrorists. He added that people in areas under Torbung Gram Panchayat in Bishnupur District had witnessed the May 3 violence which erupted in the adjoining Churachandpur District. Surchand added that many houses have been burnt down and many people have lost their lives in the area. He appealed to the government to safeguard these areas.

The Federation of Civil Society Organisation has also condemned the proposed mass burial at Torbung Bangla.  FOCS says burial of Chin Kuki Narco Terrorists cannot be held anywhere within the territory of Manipur. Speaking to media at FOCS Office in Wangkhei today, FOCS President Th. Manihar said, burial of those people who tried to break the territorial integrity of Manipur at District Sericulture Office Complex of Manipur Government in Bishnupur District is unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Co-ordinating Committee for Peace has urged everyone to come at Torbung Bangla to stop the proposed mass burial of kuki Narco Terrorists who have waged a war against the Meitei Community. Speaking on the sidelines of a mass agitation in the market against the same today, Committee Member Y. Ibeyaima said women vendors of the market will march towards Torbung Bangla starting at 8AM tomorrow from the market.

Former Chief Secretary of Manipur, Oinam Nabakishore has expressed concerns that the proposed mass burial of violence victims belonging to the Kuki community at Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur District tomorrow will lead to further unwanted incidents. He appeals to the Centre and State Governments to stop the mass burial.

The Manipur Women’s Convention has also expressed objection to the plan to hold a burial ceremony for 35 Kukis at Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur district. A member of the Manipur Women’s Convention, Asem Nirmala, told media at Manipur Press Club yesterday that the Meitei community can never agree to the burial of 35 Kukis in the Meitei area, as they have played a major role in trying to break Manipur. She also condemned Churachandpur district police and Central Forces who stood as silent spectators when Kuki women cleared the Meitei land in preparation for the burial ceremony.

It may be mentioned that COCOMI and UKAL have also condemned the proposed mass burial at Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur District. COCOMI has warned that state and central governments will be held accountable for any untoward incidents resulting from the proposed mass burial.
