Manipur police arrests two alleged UNLF cadres involved in recent IED planting

Imphal: Manipur police have arrested two “active cadres of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF)” and recovered six digital electronic circuits used in triggering IEDs and other incriminating documents, according to police.

A team of police commandos attached with the Imphal West district police arrested the two alleged active cadres during a counter insurgency operation on Sunday.

The arrested cadres have been identified as Kshetrimayum Bhogendro Singh alias Yaiphaba (41) of Imphal East district district and Aheibam Nabin Singh (48) of Imphal West district, the police further said.

Six digital electronic circuits, three mobile phones, one pan card, one pen-drive containing incriminating articles and 119 numbers of demand letters under the letter head of UNLF were recovered from their possession.

The police alleged that Kshetrimayum Bhogendro Singh was directly involved in planting an IED at Singjamei Chingamakha on September 8 last.

The powerful IED, mention may be made here, was detonated by personnel of the state police bomb detection and disposal squad.

Addressing a press conference at the conference hall of Imphal West district police today, superintendent of police, Ksh Shivakanta claimed that the six digital electronic circuits seized from the possession of Kshetrimayum Bhogendra were similar to the device used in IED which was found planted at Singjamei Chingamakha on September 8.

Both the cadres were arrested from their respective houses during the operation launched based on information, the police officer also said.

He added that acting on the information about the presence of suspects involved in the recent planting of IED at Singjamei Chingamakha near Basketball ground, a team of police commandos led by its officer incharge P Achouba launched the operation.

During the operation, Kshetrimayum Bhogendro was detained at his residence. On preliminary interrogation, he admitted that he is an active cadre of the UNLF and working for the outfit since 2006 under the command of self-styled Major Chaoba of the outfit, according to police.

Acting on his statement, the police commando team rushed to the house of Aheibam Nabin Singh at Thangmeiband and arrested him.

Both – Ksh Bhogendro and A Nabin – were formally arrested in the case related with the recent planting of IED at Singjamei Chingamakha registered at Singjamei police station.

The police officer claimed that Bhogendro is the man behind planting of the IED and he is also involved in another extortion case registered at the same Singjamei police station.
The arrested alleged cadres and the seized items were handed over to Singjamei police station for further investigation and necessary legal action, the police officer informed.
