Manipur: Senior Journalist Assaulted in Imphal East

IMPHAL: A senior journalist was assaulted by armed persons in Imphal East district on Wednesday night. According to reports, Khoirom Loiyalakpa, editor of vernacular daily newspaper Naharolgi Thoudang, was beaten up by armed persons in Imphal East district late last night. Reasons for the act and the identities of the perpetrators are not known till the filing of this report. 

The reports then said that the journalist was taken to a hospital late last night. He was discharged from the hospital later. 

Meanwhile, following the incident, the All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild, Manipur (EGM) held an emergency meeting this afternoon at Manipur Press Club in Imphal. The two media bodies strongly condemned the attack on the senior journalist.

After a minute deliberation, the two journalist bodies resolved to hold a sit-in-protest on Friday, February 20, in Imphal. 

Meanwhile, a source said that the AMWJU and the EGM will submit a memorandum to the Manipur chief minister after the sit-in protest on February 20.
