Manipur Violence: 6 Killed in Jiribam; Attempt to Loot Arms at MR Camps Thwarted; Anti-Drone Gun Activated

Imphal: A 63-year-old man, Yurembam Kulendra Singha, was shot at and killed by suspected Kuki militants while he was asleep in his residence at Ningthem Khunou Khul, Jiribam District on Saturday morning. The attack occurred under the jurisdiction of Jiribam Police Station.

As per Manipur Police on the fresh flare up in Jiribam, it said that suspected Kuki militants launched an attack on Nungchappi village in Jiribam District, resulting in the tragic death of the 63-year-old senior citizen early Saturday morning. The attackers continued their assault, targeting nearby Rasidpur village, where local village volunteers confronted the militants. During the clash, another civilian [update: not a civilian but a self-style Sergeant Baspatimayum Heithoibae of Manipur People’s Army, the military wing of UNLF] of Dibong Khunou, Jiribam, was also killed.

As per sources, local village volunteers pursued the attackers, resulting in a fierce gunfight. One village volunteer and four suspected Kuki militants were killed during the confrontation. Tensions in the district have escalated, prompting the Jiribam District Magistrate to impose strict restrictions under the BNSS Act, including bans on large gatherings, carrying weapons, and unnecessary movement by residents.

In a separate incident, armed Kuki groups launched coordinated attacks on villages in the Sugnu and Tangjeng areas, injuring two volunteers. The violence, involving bombs and bullets, originated from Churachandpur District and targeted villages in Kumbi constituency. Further clashes were reported in Pombikhok and Chandonpokpi, though no casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, Manipur Police said Kuki militants fired long range rockets at Moirang Khoiru Leikal in Friday’s attack that killed a 70-year-old RK. Rabei of Moirang Pheewangbam Leikai and injuring five others. The rocket attack by Kuki armed groups for the first time in conflict targeted the residence of late Ex-Chief Minister of Manipur, M. Koireng at Moirang Kumam, Sendra Road in Bishnupur District Friday afternoon.

Manipur Police also informed that miscreants attempted to loot arms from the 7th and 2nd Manipur Rifles (MR) camps in Khabeisoi and Imphal, respectively on the evening of September 6. The combined security forces stationed at both locations quickly responded by dispersing the mob with tear gas and blank rounds. During the confrontation, some vehicles belonging to the miscreants were reportedly damaged. Later, as a reinforcement team was returning from the 7th MR, they were ambushed by the miscreants. Two Police officers, Inspector Kh. Henery and Constable Issac Gangmei, were injured in the attack. Senior officers, led by ADGP (L/O) Shri L. Kailun, IPS, and others, rushed to the scene to regain control of the situation. The injured officers were immediately evacuated to Shija Hospital for medical treatment, Police added.

Manipur Police said that the State government, State Police is analysing the recent attacks for strengthening its manpower with sophisticated weapons and updated Anti Drone System, including deployment of military chopper to conduct arial patrolling. IGP (Intelligence), Imphal K. Kabib outlined the enhanced security measures as he reported that a new anti-drone system is now in place and additional anti-drone weapons are being acquired.

Appealing for public cooperate with the security force in maintenance of law and order in the State, Manipur Police also cautioned that any miscreants trying to interfere, loot arms from security will be dealt seriously as per law.
