Imphal: A large number of women blocked troops of Assam Rifles who came to take post at an inspection bungalow (IB) of Manipur Water Resources department in  Kakching district of Manipur.

Reports said that a column of 33 Assam Rifles came to take post at the IB situated near Keirak-Sekmai Barrage in Kakching today.

However, a large number of residents of Keirak, Sekmaijin and Wabagai areas, mostly womenfolk, protested against the stationing of the Central paramilitary in the area. They forced the vehicles of the Assam Rifles to move back from the area.

The protesters said that they have no objection to the deployment of other security forces, may be the state or Central force other than the Assam Rifles in the area.

“We have no trust on the Assam Rifles and will not allow stationing of the paramilitary force in the area at any cost,” a woman leader among the protesters said.

Meanwhile, timely intervention by a strong team of police led by SDPO Kakching and OC of the Kakching police station prevented any unwanted incident arising out of obstruction given to the movement of the security force.

In a separate case, the protest against alleged move to replace troops of 9 Gorkha Regiment by Assam Rifles at a security outpost at Leimaram, a village in Bishnupur district adjoining Kangpokpi district intensified on Wednesday.

Meitei dominated villages in Leimaram areas have been protesting in the past three days against an alleged move of the authorities to replace the troops of 9 Gorkha Regiment deploying in the area by the Assam Rifles.
