Shillong, Oct 14: The Manipuri Elders’ Consortium Shillong (MECS) will organize a mass protest against the insensitive demolition of the historic Manipur Rajbari, Shillong — a heritage site that has stood as a symbol of Manipuri history and identity for generations.

The protest will take place on October 15, at 7:30 am, at Manipur Rajbari, Redlands, Boyce Road, Shillong.

This protest calls upon all people of Manipuri origin and supporters of heritage conservation to come together and voice their concern over the loss of a site that represents a crucial chapter in the shared history of Manipur and Meghalaya, the MECS stated.

The Rajbari stands as a “living history”, being the place where significant events, including the signing of the Manipur Merger Agreement of 1949, took place, the MECS said.

The MECS urged the government and concerned authorities to immediately halt further demolition and initiate restoration measures to preserve this invaluable heritage structure.
