Imphal: In a significant milestone for Manipuri cinema and LGBTQ+ representation, the eagerly awaited feature film “ONENESS” is set to make its world premiere at the prestigious KASHISH Pride Film Festival 2024, South Asia’s largest queer film festival.
Directed by Priyakanta Laishram, “ONENESS” has already carved its place in history as the first Manipuri film to center on same-sex relationships. Despite facing challenges ranging from societal taboos to regional conflicts, the film’s journey to the silver screen has been one of resilience and determination.
Scheduled to be held from May 15 to May 19, 2024, in Mumbai, the KASHISH Pride Film Festival will showcase “ONENESS” as the sole representative from Northeast India. This recognition underscores the film’s significance in amplifying LGBTQ+ narratives from the region.
Producer Roushil Singla and director Priyakanta Laishram spearhead the project, supported by an ensemble cast featuring Maya Choudhury, Priyakanta Laishram, Suraj Ngashepam, Sachinker Sagolsem, Harendra Laishram, Ramva Leishangthem, and Rojesh Saikhom.
“ONENESS” delves into the intricacies of love and relationships within Manipuri society, shining a spotlight on the challenges encountered by individuals in same-sex partnerships. Through its narrative, the film aims to challenge societal norms and foster acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ+ individuals.
For Priyakanta Laishram, “ONENESS” marks a significant milestone in his filmmaking journey, signaling his debut as a full-length feature filmmaker under the banner of Priyakanta Productions. Despite facing hurdles, Laishram’s vision for the film has remained unwavering, resonating with audiences eager for diverse and inclusive storytelling.
