Imphal: Amid the ongoing crisis in Manipur, Naorem Roshibina Devi, a young wushu player from the state who has made the country proud at the Asian Games 2023 has renewed hope for the people. On Thursday, Roshibina Devi bagged the silver medal at the 60 kg Wushu tournament at the ongoing 19th Asian Games, Hangzhou in China.
She dedicated the medal to the people of her home state Manipur and promised to work even harder for the upcoming 2023 World Wushu Championships. “I would like to dedicate the silver medal to the people of Manipur. To my community, the people who are protecting us,” said the star wushu player.

Despite her big win, Roshibina Devi, a native of Bishnupur district, which is the epicentre of the ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kukis, will not be celebrating her success as her state Manipur is still burning and the people including her family remain affected by the violence.

“I am happy about my performance but I could have been happier if I could bag the gold and also if the problem back at home could have been solved,” said the star wushu athlete post her win.

As a two-time Asiad medallist, she has become the country’s most celebrated wushu athlete. Earlier, she has won a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta and gold medal at the 2019 South Asian Games in Nepal.

The ongoing violence in Manipur has already claimed over 150 previous lives and displaced as many as 60,000 people internally. The state continues to remain tense following the fresh violence which erupted on Monday over the two deceased students.
