Ukhrul, November 28: Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets on Friday in Lamlai Assembly Constituency, Imphal East District, Manipur, advocating for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Manipur. The 5-kilometer march started at Nongada Ground and concluded at Yourabung High School Ground, drawing support from a diverse range of civil society groups, including Poirei Apunba Leimarol Meira Paibi, North East United Clubs Organisation, Manipur Students Federation (Lamlai Branch), and the All Manipur Women Voluntary Association Tellou Unit.

Protestors criticised the Central Government’s decision to reimpose AFSPA in the valley areas of Manipur amidst ongoing conflict. They underscored that the people of Manipur have consistently opposed the act and will not accept its reintroduction. They accused the central authorities of undermining efforts for peaceful coexistence in the state and called for unity among the public to resist AFSPA’s presence.

Participants also demanded arrest of those responsible for the recent killings in Jiribam and warned of intensified protests if the government failed to respond. Labelling the lack of action by both Central and State Governments as “inhumane”, they called for immediate and decisive measures to address the situation. Protesters chanted slogans against AFSPA, demanding justice and peace.
