Imphal: In continuation to the state government’s war on drugs campaign, a joint team of Manipur police along with Rongmei Naga Students’ Organisation Manipur (RNSOM) destroyed 4 hectares of poppy plantations in Noney district on Monday.

Troops from 39 Assam Rifles and other government agencies were also part of the drive carried out at T Khongmol village under Nungba sub-division.

According to Nilamani Singh, officer in-charge of Nungba police station, the joint team led by additional SP Noney Sangboi Gangte carried out the drive from 10 am in the morning and destroyed the massive poppy plantation spread across at least 4 hectares at T Khongmol, Longpi Circle under Nungba PS.

The joint team has also initiated legal action against the chairman of T Khongmol and the poppy cultivator. Both of them were not in the village during the time of operation and they will be dealt with according to the law of the land, it said.

“It is surprising to see such massive plantations despite several requests, appeals and warnings from the state government. Search and survey drive of such poppy plantations will continue and destroy all if found in the coming days” said OC Nilamani Singh.

According to the locals, chairman of T Khongmol lives in Churachandpur while the poppy cultivators reside in T Khongmol.

RNSOM president Daichui maintains that while the chief minister N Biren Singh had declared war on drugs and appealed to make drugs free state, it is very surprising and unexpected to see such huge plantations going on in Nungba sub-division.

The student leader further said that “Rongmei people never practices such poppy or any kind of drugs-related plantations and had declared poppy-free in all Rongmei areas last year, supporting the government initiatives.”

We will continue to work with the government agencies to completely eradicate this menace at the best interest of the public and we will continue to work together with the government to make Tamenglong and Noney districts -a Poppy Free Districts, said Daichui.

He further said that a continuous survey will be conducted in both these two districts and cautioned anybody involved to surrender/quit before they are caught and take legal action.

The organisation will never hesitate to protect and safeguard the future generations and always stood along the Government to help in ending illegal drug business, added Daichui.
