Meghalaya COVID-19 update: Active cases ups at 1133, one succumbs

UT News Service | Shillong, Aug 23: The total active cases of COVID-19 in Meghalaya has also gone up to 1,133 after 106 more people, including 62 civilians tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. Health officials also informed that an eighty-four year old patient died due to COVID-19 at Tura civil hospital in West Garo Hills on Sunday, taking the death toll in the state to 8.

Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said that the elderly man, a resident of Tikrikilla Bazaar area who tested positive for COVID-19 during a random testing, was admitted at the Tura Civil hospital on August 18.

Meanwhile, the Director informed that the state has reported a total of 106 new cases on Sunday of which 64, including 38 civilians and 26 AF/PF (armed forces and paramilitary forces), were detected from East Khasi Hills, 16 from West Khasi Hills, 10 from South Garo Hills, 9 from West Garo Hills, 3 each from East Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi and 1 from North Garo Hills.

He said the 38 civilians from East Khasi Hills include a food handler at MATI Corona Care Centre in Mawdiangdiang, a patient at NEIGRIHMS, a returnee and 35 are contacts of positive cases.

Dr. War said that 16 cases in West Khasi Hills are all from the random testing conducted at Shahlang, while the 10 cases in South Garo Hills are from the armed forces and paramilitary forces, 9 including 7 armed forces-paramilitary forces and 2 from random sampling at Phulbari and Jaldupara are in West Garo Hills, 2 high risk contacts and a returnee in Ri Bhoi, 3 returnees in East Jaintia Hills and 1 high risk contact in North Garo Hills.

The Director of Health Services further informed that 7 more patients, that include 3 from East Khasi Hills, 2 from Ri Bhoi, 1 each from East Jaintia Hills and North Garo Hills have also recovered on Sunday, taking the total recoveries in the state to 776.

East Khasi Hills has the highest number of active cases at 723 that include 456 civilians and 267 AF/PF, followed by West Garo Hills 223 cases (146 AF/PF forces and 77 civilians), 94 cases (68 civilians and 26 AF/PF) in Ri Bhoi and 44 in West Khasi Hills.

In other districts, East Jaintia Hills has 14 cases, 12 each in South Garo Hills and North Garo Hills and 3 each in East Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills.

Meanwhile, the state has so far recorded a total of 1,917 COVID-19 positive cases of which 1,133 active and eight deaths.
