Shillong, Mar 12: Meghalaya deputy speaker Timothy D Shira today filed criminal defamation cases against two individuals for accusing him of being totally against the demand for the creation of a winter capital in Tura, West Garo Hills district in a social media platform.

Shira’s counsel said, “Today we have filed two cases – one is defamation and one is criminal defamation. In the criminal defamation case if they can’t prove their allegation they can be punished as per criminal laws and we have also filed a defamation suit for claiming damage of 100 crore from each of them and this is because they have wrongly interpreted what the deputy speaker has spoken in the Assembly.”

“One of the accused defendants is from Assam, who has nothing to do with Meghalaya. She has also misinterpreted statements or speech spoken in the Assembly in a different manner and that has defamed my client in his constituency, in Garo Hills and for that he is aggrieved with the action of these two people and that is why he has approached the court by filing these two defamation cases,” he stated.

Speaking to reporters, Shira said, “I have filed criminal defamation cases against two individuals as they have made viral on YouTube regarding my speech in the Assembly with regards to making Tura, the winter capital.”

“Without knowing the details of what I have spoken in the House, they have flashed on Youtube that I am totally against my community, I am totally against making Tura the winter capital and thereby he said he condemned me for not cooperating with the community,” the deputy speaker added.
