The opposition Congress in Meghalaya has expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family members of those who lost their lives due to incessant rain and has urged the State government to immediately provide financial assistance to them.

Expressing his condolences, Nongthymmai MLA, Charles Pyngrope from the Congress said that as a government they should have regulated infrastructure development, especially in areas which are vulnerable and where the soil is not stable – so that lives can be saved in the future.

The opposition Chief Whip, P. T. Sawkmie said that many lives were lost, houses damaged and many injured due to the incessant rain and he urged the State government to provide immediate financial assistance.

Sawkmie also pointed out that a three year old who died on Friday in Mawlai due to the natural calamity was buried without the post mortem being conducted, as the family had to wait from three in the afternoon till 10 pm at night and they decided not to do so.

He requested Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma to provide compensation to the family, even if the post mortem was not done, as it is an open case of death due to natural calamity.
