SHILLONG: Meghalaya is still awaiting a date from the Prime Minister for the inauguration of Shillong Medical College, Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said today, while confirming that Tura Medical College’s infrastructure is 95 per cent complete.

Speaking after an event in Shillong, Shylla said previous attempts to fix the inauguration date had to be cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. “Till now, not yet. On two earlier occasions we had decided on dates, but later something else came up, so we had to cancel it,” he told reporters.

The minister added that the state government remains in touch with the Prime Minister’s Office. “Even now we are in touch, and we are still waiting for the date from the Prime Minister. Last time I reminded the Union Health minister during the inauguration of ARHI Hospital that we are still awaiting the date and time from the Prime Minister,” Shylla said.

He expressed hope that a final date would be locked in soon. “I think very soon we will be able to fix and finalise the date for the inauguration,” he said.

On the status of Tura Medical College, Shylla said construction is nearly complete. “Infrastructure is almost 95 per cent complete if you talk about the structural part. On the recruitment side, we have already floated advertisements for faculty posts,” he said. However, the response from applicants has been lukewarm so far.
