Meghalaya: Three Sentenced to 20 Years in Jail for Gang Rape

Shillong, June 19: Three persons have been convicted and sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a gang rape case.

The court of DR Kharbteng, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) East Khasi Hills in its judgment passed on June 2, 2025, convicted and sentenced the three accused persons – Marwello Lawai, Elipsing Lawai and Rakesh Marboh in a case registered with the Mawrynkneng police station in 2022.

They were booked under sections 323 (relating to voluntarily causing hurt), 343 (wrongful confinement) and 376D (gang rape), East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said in a statement issued today.

“The court has sentenced them to simple imprisonment for a term of one year for the offence u/s 323 & 343 IPC and to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years with fine of Rs 1 lakh each for the offence u/s 376D. In default of payment of fine, the accused persons shall undergo simple imprisonment for 2 months,” he said. 

The case was investigated by WP/SI KD Sangma presently posted in the Directorate of (Infiltration).
