Shillong, July 4: Meghalaya will now check and monitor the health of livestock entering the state.

Minister in charge of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, AL Hek, informed today that construction of two check-posts in Ri Bhoi and Garo Hills will be completed soon to ensure health monitoring of livestock entering Meghalaya from outside.

“The check-posts will examine whether animals are fit for consumption,” Hek told reporters, adding that standard operating procedures are already in place.

His statement follows a complaint by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council to the department, demanding action against illegal transportation of animals.

Hek assured that all livestock entering the state must undergo proper health checks with supporting documentation. He added that a government notification has already been issued, directing deputy commissioners to act against any violations involving livestock transport.
