Mirabai Chanu creates World Record in 119kg Clean and Jerk at Asian Weightlifting Championships

Manipur’s Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, former world champion clinched a bronze medal at the weightlifting arena in Asian Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Saturday.

Mirabai Chanu, 26-year-old Indian set a new world record in clean and jerk 119kg in clean and jerk for a total of 205kg.

Mirabai Chanu lifted 86kg in snatch and a world record of 119kg in clean and jerk for a total of 205kg. She also confirmed her Tokyo Olympic spot as she has now competed in the six mandatory qualifying events.

“We are delighted by the clean and jerk performance but we have to improve snatch. It is a huge thing that an Indian has set a new world record in weightlifting,” national coach Vijay Sharma told PTI.

While the earlier clean and jerk world record was 118kg, Chanu’s personal best total in 49kg was 203kg (88kg+115kg) at the National Championship in February last year.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu took to twitter and said “I am happy with my performance at the Asian Championship 2021. Thank you everyone for your love and support. I will continue to work hard and improve myself”.
