The issue of the Tripura-Mizoram boundary dispute has come in the news again on Sunday. The Mizoram government objected to the activities in the disputed area at Thaidawr Tlang near Phuldungsei village in Mamit district of Mizoram. The Mizoram government also alleged that there is a proposal from a certain community to construct a temple in the disputed area in the Mizoram-Tripura border.

It can be mentioned that Tripura and Mizoram share 66 km inter-state boundary.

The Mizoram Home department wrote a letter to its counterpart in Tripura a few days ago asking the latter not to construct anything in the disputed area. The letter expressed that a law and order issue can crop up if precaution is not taken.

The letter of the Mizoram Home department said, “A report has been received by the Mizoram government that Songrongma of Tripura, a local indigenous organisation, is attempting to construct a temple at the disputed interstate border village near Phuldungsei at Thaidawr Tlang in Mamit district”.  The letter added, “It is also reported that community work is proposed to be organized on October 19 and 20”.

The letter of the Mizoram Home department then said, “Since any activities within the disputed Inter-state border can result in law and order problems, it is requested to kindly intervene and issue necessary instructions to the concerned district administration for the immediate and indefinite stoppage of the proposed construction”.

The Mizoram Home department then said it had requested the Survey of India to facilitate a joint spot verification involving both the Mizoram and Tripura governments to resolve the dispute.
