Imphal:  Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president, K Meghachandra on Wednesday said that as an MLA he “supports the demand for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe list of Indian Constitution.

He then accepted a memorandum submitted by the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM).

Leaders and members of the STDCM today visited the MLA at his official quarter in Imphal’s Babupara and submitted the memorandum after briefing the MLA about the demand raised by the committee.

The STDCM along with other civil society organizations supporting the demand are meeting with ministers and MLAs of Manipur as a part of its campaign for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list of Indian Constitution.

“As an MLA, I have been raising my voice in favour of the Meetei/Meitei community. I as an individual support the demand,” he said.

The MLA then said that fulfilling or non-fulfilling of the demand is upto the government. “It is the government to decide. Government is the authority,” he also said.

The STDCM has been campaigning for ST tag for the Meetei/Meitei for several years now and after a series of sit-in-demonstrations, the committee recently changed its course of campaign.
