Imphal: Former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh on Saturday said that reservation of seats for women in the Parliament and legislative assemblies would have been implemented in the country if Rajiv Gandhi was alive and continued to be the Prime Minister of India.

The Congress today remembered former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 78th birth anniversary.

O Ibobi Singh led the Congress leaders and workers here in paying floral tributes to the photograph of the former Prime Minister of India as Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the day at the Congress Bhavan here.

Ibobi said that Congress always committed to the conversion of promises made.

The Congress still stands for the empowerment of women in the country and it is still committed to the reservation of 30% seats of the Parliament and state Assemblies, he said.

The seat reservation for the women in the country’s highest decision making body and states’ highest decision making was initiated by Rajiv Gandhi.

Unfortunately, it did not materialize during his period as Prime Minister, he added.

Ibobi said that it was during Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister, the 30% reservation of the seats in the local elected bodies started.
