Ukhrul: The Naga People’s Front (NPF) says it takes strong exception to the proposed auction of ancient Naga human remains in the UK, viewing it as a direct affront to the dignity, heritage, and identity of the Naga people. While the party urges the Government of India to show its responsibility in protecting the cultural rights of its indigenous communities, the auction, the regional party in a press statement on Wednesday, says, not only disrespects the cultural values of the Nagas, but also “reflects a continuation of the colonial exploitation that Nagas and other indigenous communities have long endured”.

Further, NPF says, “The proposed auction of our ancestors’ remains, which are sacred to our traditions, is completely unacceptable. These remains are not artefacts for profit—they are a critical part of our cultural identity. We view this as an extension of the colonial mindset that looted and desecrated indigenous heritage for the benefit of foreign collectors and institutions.”

Stating that it stands firm in its commitment to defend the rights, dignity, and identity of the Naga people, the NPF calls on the Government of India to take immediate diplomatic action to stop the auction and secure the repatriation of these sacred remains to their rightful place. “This is a matter of respect for the Naga people’s history, traditions, and our long-standing struggle for self-determination. Allowing this auction to proceed would be tantamount to condoning the continued exploitation of indigenous, especially the Naga peoples’ heritage for commercial gain,” NPF says.
