National Issues Increasingly Overshadowed by Party Interests: Dr. S.C. Jamir

Ukhrul, Feb 24: Former Chief Minister of Nagaland and former Governor of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and Odisha, Dr. S. C. Jamir said that national issues are increasingly overshadowed by party interests, and legislative debates have lost the decorum and civility they once had.

Dr S C Jamir was speaking at Youth Conclave-cum-Cultural Fest in Dimapur on February 22, a DIPR report said today.

The Linguistic Minority Forum of Nagaland (LMFN) hosted an inspiring Youth Conclave-cum-Cultural Fest under the theme ‘Unity in diversity,’ at Lions Club, Dimapur, bringing together community leaders, students, and distinguished guests for a day of dialogue, cultural celebration, and unity.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. S. C. Jamir said that the nation was shifting away from its foundational values of unity and inclusivity. Dr. Jamir, a veteran politician who served as a Member of Parliament from 1961 and held key positions under Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, reflected on the drastic changes in India’s political landscape. He lamented that national issues are increasingly overshadowed by party interests, and legislative debates have lost the decorum and civility they once had.

Reflecting on Nagaland’s history, Dr. Jamir noted that the state’s formation came through immense sacrifices. However, he expressed concern over rising tribalism and internal divisions. “We started with only one district; today, we have 17. There was one Naga National Political Group (NNPG); now, we have 27. Are we multiplying negativity in the State?” he questioned while urging people to prioritize unity over division. Dr. Jamir encouraged the young people to focus on shaping a better future instead of dwelling on past conflicts and called on political leaders to create opportunities for the youth and ensure an inclusive, progressive future for Nagaland.

Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Sushmita Dev addressed the event, emphasizing the importance of cultural integration and respect among communities. She stressed that India would remain divided without mutual understanding and warned of the dangers of forgetting history.

Former MLA, Dr. Chumben Murry at the event, called for unity beyond ethnic and linguistic lines, suggesting that the term ‘Non-Naga Linguistic Forum’ replaces the word ‘minority’ to promote inclusivity. Murry also urged the youth to develop a global outlook, warning that neglecting to adapt to technological advancements and global issues could leave them behind in an evolving world.

The event featured speeches from various dignitaries including social worker Captain (Retd.) Hekiye Sema and LMFN chairman, Bishnu Bhattacharjee underscoring the collective call for unity, tolerance, and a renewed commitment to secularism. The event concluded with a cultural dance performance and a communal lunch, fostering connections among attendees and celebrating Nagaland’s diverse heritage.

Cultural performances, including a Classical Fusion Dance by students of St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, added a vibrant touch to the event, while a Rhythm Music Centre performance concluded the first half.

The conclave showcased how cultural festivities and intellectual discussions can go hand in hand, leaving participants inspired and ready to contribute to their communities, grave concerns over India’s political trajectory, cautioning that the country may face severe consequences if secularism is not upheld, the DIPR further reported.
