NIA Arrests 3 Insurgents Linked to 2024 Attack on Manipur Police Commandos in Moreh

Ukhrul, June 8: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested three insurgents in connection with a deadly attack on security forces in Moreh, Tengnoupal district of Manipur in 2024 which left two police commandos dead and several others injured.

According to the NIA, the three insurgents were involved in planning, conspiring and executing the January 17, 2024 attack on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) post and security forces in Moreh, located along the India-Myanmar border.

Among those arrested is Thangminlen Mate, a resident of Tengnoupal district and member of the Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal (KIT) insurgent group. He had played a key role in orchestrating and carrying out the attack. He was apprehended on May 19, 2025 in Silchar, Assam and produced before the NIA Court in Guwahati, which remanded him to custody till May 28.

He is currently lodged in Central Jail, Guwahati, under judicial custody, the NIA mentioned in its statement.

The other accused, identified as Kamginthang Gangte, a member of the Kuki National Army (KNA), and Hentinthang Kipgen alias Thangneo Kipgen, associated with the Village Volunteers group in Churachandpur district, were arrested from Imphal on June 6, 2025. They were presented before the Duty Magistrate, who granted a transit remand till June 9 for their transfer to the NIA Special Court in Guwahati. The duo was part of the team that had executed the deadly attack, the NIA stated.

NIA is continuing with its investigations and search for the other perpetrators of the attack in the case RC-05/2024/NIA/IMP, it added.
