Ukhrul, June 8: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a member of Arambai Tenggol (AT) from Imphal Airport, the national investigating agency said in a statement on Sunday.

The AT member was “involved in various criminal activities related to Manipur violence in 2023. He was brought from Imphal to Guwahati. He will be produced before the competent court for police remand. Investigation is continuing,” the probe agency stated.

“The information related to his arrest has been given to his family members,” the federal agency stated.

The CBI is investigating Manipur violence cases as per the direction of the Supreme Court.

“The trials of the Manipur violence cases have been shifted from Manipur to Guwahati in view of the law-and-order situation in Manipur,” the CBI added.

The situation became tense in Imphal, the state capital, on Saturday night following reports of the arrest of the key leader of Arambai Tenggol. Protesters took to streets, clashed with the security forces and burned tyres and old furniture in the middle of the roads, (in Kwakeithel and Uripok), demanding the release of the AT leader.

This prompted the administration to impose prohibitory orders in five valley districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Kakching district while internet and mobile-data services, including VSAT and VPN facilities have been suspended in the five districts for five days with effect from 11:45 PM on June 7, to prevent the situation from escalating further.
