Ukhrul: The central government has transferred Rs 1,73,030 crore in tax revenue to states to boost capital expenditure and fund development and welfare schemes. Of this, the eight Northeastern states collectively received Rs 19,220.79 crore, with Tripura receiving Rs 1,225.04 crore, as per a statement issued by the Union Finance Ministry on Friday.
Among the Northeastern states, Assam received the highest amount, Rs 5,412.38 crore, followed by Arunachal Pradesh with Rs 3,040.14 crore and Meghalaya at Rs 1,327.13 crore. Manipur received Rs 1,238.90 crore, Mizoram Rs 865.15 crore, Nagaland Rs 984.54 crore, and Sikkim Rs 671.35 crore.

This allocation highlights the government’s focus on bolstering the region’s development, particularly in areas requiring infrastructure and welfare investment. Compared to larger states, the per capita financial support to Northeastern states remains significantly higher, reflecting the unique developmental challenges faced by the region.
In comparison, Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, received the highest allocation at Rs 31,039.84 crore, followed by Bihar with Rs 17,403.36 crore and Madhya Pradesh at Rs 13,582.86 crore. Other major allocations included Maharashtra (Rs 10,930.31 crore), Rajasthan (Rs 10,426.78 crore), Tamil Nadu (Rs 7,057.89 crore), and Odisha (Rs 7,834.80 crore).

Other states in the Northeast’s neighbourhood also received notable amounts. West Bengal was allocated Rs 1,317.06 crore, while Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh received Rs 5,722.10 crore and Rs 5,895.13 crore, respectively.
The Finance Ministry stated that this higher tax devolution, compared to Rs 89,086 crore in December, aims to accelerate capital expenditure and support welfare initiatives across the states.
