It may be mentioned that the Eastern Flank, Naga army issued a condolence message according to which the cadres were on duty to stop and check timber and other business activities at the present Indo-Mayanmar border via Hongbei Village, Kasom Khullen. The order to open fire was allegedly given by 2nd Lieut. Mathotmi, reportedly affiliated with NSCN-IM.
The message further stated that an order to fire upon their own cadres could not have originated from a junior officer, asserting that such a directive would have had to come from the highest authority—either the Collective Leadership or the Longvibu.
