NSCN Kitovi Zhimomi Takes Over Khehoyi Camp; Army says Military Takeover

Ukhrul, Mar 22: In a major development regarding the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-U) faction in Nagaland, the GPRN/NSCN N Kitovi Zhimomi group has reportedly taken over the Khehoyi camp in Niuland. Previously, this camp was occupied by the NSCN-U faction led by Ato Kilonser Alezo Venuh and Commander-in-Chief Samson Ayemi.

Reliable sources have said that top leaders Alezo Venuh and Samson Ayemi left the camp on Friday evening. There is no report of violence in what is described as a “military coup” till the filing of this report.

It is worth noting that Kitovi Zhimomi was impeached by the NSCN-U in April 2024 for allegedly violating the group’s Constitution. Since then, Ato Kilonser Alezo Venuh and Commander-in-Chief Samson Ayemi have been occupying the camp. Importantly, N Kitovi Zhimomi also serves as the Convener of the Working Committee of the NNPGs, a coalition of Naga political groups engaged in negotiations with the Indian government.

Speaking to the press in May 2024, N Kitovi Zhimomi stated, “Khehoyi is my camp, and I established this Khehoyi unification camp. Unification means inviting everyone, not expelling one group after another. I will certainly return to occupy my home.”

When asked about the potential for violence, he responded, “No violence.”

Meanwhile, the military wing of the NSCN-U faction has clarified that it was a military takeover to show unity despite differences among the civil wings.

Speaking to media persons today outside the camp, Colonel Joseph Awomi of the Naga Army stated that it was a military coup as the army was not satisfied with the leadership. He also stated that the Naga Army from both groups came together on Friday evening as they did not want disunity among themselves having worked together for so long. The cabinet will decide the next step and choose the next leader, he further said adding whatever the impeachment or problems are going on, the Naga Army has nothing to do with it.

At this point, it remains unclear who will ascend to the new leadership. Reports suggest that it may take two to three working days to gain more insights as well as to cool the temperature. There have been reports of tensions brewing in the camp for the past few months. The camp is currently under strict surveillance, and no media personnel have been permitted inside.
